DEXPI in the ACHEMA Magazine: Engineering Information & AI

AI, digital twins, and lifecycle engineering all share a common prerequisite: reliable engineering information. DEXPI e.V. has published a substantive contribution in the ACHEMA Magazine that addresses precisely this structural challenge. Why Engineering Information Is the Missing Foundation In the process industry, engineering information is still often exchanged through documents, creating fragmentation, coordination effort, and data loss across system boundaries. The ACHEMA Magazine article argues that the key challenge is therefore not adding more tools, but making engineering information consistently available across all lifecycle phases. DEXPI 2.0 addresses this shift by providing a semantically structured, open information model that supports interoperability and creates a more reliable foundation for AI, digital twins, and data-driven engineering.

DEXPI 2.0 at the Smart Process Manufacturing Congress 2026

On October 21, 2026, DEXPI will be represented at the Smart Process Manufacturing Congress in Würzburg with a presentation by Wilhelm Otten, DEXPI.e.V. and WOtten Consulting, titled “Asset Lifecycle information management based on DEXPI 2.0”.

For the 16th time, the Smart Process Manufacturing Congress brings together technical experts and decision-makers to discuss current developments in digital engineering for the process industry. This year’s program focuses in particular on open standards and interoperability, Agentic AI, and autonomous robotics in chemical plants. In this context, DEXPI’s participation is highly relevant, as semantically structured engineering information is a key prerequisite for reliable cross-disciplinary collaboration and standardized data exchange across lifecycle phases.

DEXPI’s contribution will show how DEXPI 2.0 supports Asset Lifecycle Information Management through standardized, semantically structured information models across the plant lifecycle. It will explain why interoperability depends not only on data exchange, but on a shared understanding of engineering information across disciplines and systems. It will also highlight why scalable AI applications in the process industry require semantic information models as their foundation and how current harmonization work initiated by DEXPI contributes to this development.

DEXPI P&ID Specification 1.4 in practice: Results from the 2026 testing campaign

From May to July 2026, DEXPI e.V. commissioned the independent testing company Mitosis Digital Technologies to assess three software solutions from CADMATIC and Semantum against the DEXPI P&ID Specification 1.4. The results provide practical insights for the further development of standardized data exchange in the process industry.

The assessment covered CADMATIC P&ID, Semantum Model Broker, and the Model Broker DEXPI Viewer. Based on the DEXPI Testing Procedure 2025, it evaluated export, import, and cross-application compatibility, including engineering attributes and graphical representation.

The results confirmed overall support for DEXPI-based workflows, with particular strengths in export and viewing. At the same time, the campaign identified gaps in attribute mapping, graphical consistency, and complete CAD import capabilities. The findings underline the need to distinguish more clearly between the purposes of authoring, conversion, and viewing tools in future testing.

Collaboration with both software providers supported efficient test execution and helped clarify open issues. The campaign also highlighted priorities for future testing, including clearer scope definitions, enhanced or extended PIDs, coverage of DEXPI 2.0 examples for PFDs,  improved validation tools, and more automated comparisons of engineering data across applications. DEXPI e.V. thanks CADMATIC, Semantum, and Mitosis for their expertise and constructive collaboration. The Testing Procedure will be adapted for DEXPI 2.0, and a further testing round is targeted for 2027. DEXPI’s framing around open, vendor-neutral standardized data exchange is consistent with its published specifications and mission.
