The first Process Industry Data Model Integration Congress (PIDMIC 1.0) was held in the context of ACHEMA 2022 and marked the starting point of a recurring congress format dedicated to data model integration and interoperability in the process industry.
PIDMIC 1.0 was initiated to create transparency across the growing landscape of data and information models used along the asset lifecycle and to establish a neutral platform for exchange between standardization initiatives, industry consortia, software vendors, and asset owners.
Motivation and Background
Digital engineering, operations, and digital twins rely on consistent and interoperable information models. At the same time, numerous initiatives and standards have emerged, each addressing specific lifecycle phases, disciplines, or use cases.
PIDMIC 1.0 was motivated by the need to:
-
create a shared overview of existing data model initiatives,
-
identify overlaps, gaps, and interfaces,
-
and foster early alignment and collaboration rather than isolated development.
Structure of PIDMIC 1.0
The congress combined presentation and discussion formats over two days:
-
Presentations & Landscape Overview
Participating initiatives and organizations presented their approaches, scope, and objectives related to data and information modeling in the process industry. -
Interactive Workshops & Discussion Sessions
Moderated sessions focused on challenges, integration points, and future directions, laying the foundation for continued exchange beyond the event itself.
Participating Initiatives and Perspectives
PIDMIC 1.0 brought together representatives from international standardization bodies, industry-driven initiatives, academia, and solution providers. The diversity of perspectives highlighted both the complexity of the data landscape and the strong shared interest in interoperability and alignment.
Outcome and Significance
PIDMIC 1.0 established PIDMIC as more than a one-time workshop:
-
It demonstrated the value of cross-initiative dialogue.
-
It confirmed the need for a neutral, recurring integration platform.
-
It laid the groundwork for subsequent PIDMIC editions in 2023, 2024, and beyond.
With PIDMIC 1.0, DEXPI initiated a long-term format that continues to support collaboration and alignment across organizational and standardization boundaries.
