DEXPI is pleased to announce the publication of the joint industry best-practice document:
“Asset Lifecycle Information Management – Methodology, Principles and Information Models.”
Developed within the framework of the PIDMIC (Process Industry Data Model Integration Conference) initiative, this document represents a major collaborative achievement across leading industry associations, standardization bodies, owner-operators, engineering companies, and academia.
A Joint Industry Contribution
The publication is the result of extensive collaboration between the DEXPI community and partner organisations including IOGP/CFIHOS, USPI, CII, POSCCAESAR, SEIIA, NAMUR, ISO representatives, and many industry experts.
The document defines an industry best practice for managing structured engineering and operational information across the entire asset lifecycle — from early concept development through engineering, construction, commissioning, and long-term plant operation.
Why Asset Lifecycle Information Management Matters
Process industry assets typically operate for several decades, while engineering information is created by multiple stakeholders using different tools and data models. This frequently results in fragmented information landscapes, manual handovers, and inconsistencies between engineering and operations.
The published best practice promotes:
- Integrated lifecycle information management
- Model-based engineering instead of document-centric workflows
- Interoperable and vendor-neutral data structures
- Digital twin–enabled collaboration across disciplines
- Improved data quality and reduced engineering rework
The approach supports the transition toward fully digital engineering environments and sustainable lifecycle data management.
Scope of the Document
The best-practice guide provides:
- A methodology for asset lifecycle information management
- Definitions and guiding principles
- Alignment with international standards (ISO, IEC, BIM frameworks)
- Overview of industry information models such as DEXPI, CFIHOS, and FL3DMS
- Guidance across all project phases (FEL1–FEL3 through operations)
- Practical concepts for integrated digital engineering
It applies to chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and energy industries and supports both greenfield and brownfield projects.
Outcome of PIDMIC Collaboration
The document originates from alignment activities initiated within PIDMIC, where participating organisations agreed to jointly develop a harmonised best-practice framework for lifecycle information management.
This publication demonstrates how collaboration between standards organisations can create a coherent ecosystem rather than competing specifications — a key objective of PIDMIC.
